You can’t out-Amazon Amazon - that’s the story Walmart owned over 20 years ago.
Some say they’re trying - free shipping, 2-day delivery... but that’s only playing at the extremes. The heart of Walmart’s race to the bottom that kills local, independent, stand-alone stores and grocers of all kinds is still that Walmart is really good at being Walmart. They could pay employees more - but then they’d have to offer a couple thousand sku’s like CostCo and not the tens-of-thousands they do carry. They’d have to stop being Walmart, and as long as they can do that, Walmart will win at being Walmart. Even as local sentiment self-righteously shifts away from big-box to independent and locally sourced and niche and more expensive retail. Let Amazon create new channels of expectations, then follow after they've paid the price (think Walmart+). Walmart will still survive being Walmart. So, what about you? Figure out who you are and become better at being you. This is your future... that and finding a message that connects with your customer - not any customer, but your customer. Comments are closed.
