There's an old, simple aphorism - you've probably heard it - you may even practice it.

But probably not.

When is the best time to plant a tree?

Twenty years ago.

When's the second best time to plant a tree?

Today.

Aphorisms are cute.

They're memorable.

And they're so nice they don't make us think twice.

That's unfortunate.
