There's probably no better signal of respect and engagement than taking notes in response to someone's presentation, comment, or lecture.
More than nodding our heads. More than smiling. More than asking if this will be on the test. In college classrooms it's less and less common for people to take notes. And when they show-up in the real world at their first meeting as an employee they carry this bad habit with them... and suffer for it. Taking notes may be the easiest 'tell' of engagement - even if it doesn't help you personally to understand and/or retain what's being said. (By the way, if you actually believe it doesn't help to take notes you're lying to yourself.) Try it... take notes the next time you're in a meeting or class and see what happens.
