When I was young the question everyone could answer was, Where were you when Kennedy was shot?
But for most of us the question is, Where were you on September 11? I was teaching an early morning class at Elmhurst College. Usually in the flight path of O'Hare, the sky was eerily quiet that early morning, but no one knew how much life would change for the world because of September 11. So I went to hit a bucket of golf balls at a driving range - and I was the only one there. It seemed like I was the last person to 'get' that this day was different. And when I went back on September 12 and September 13 and September 14 and... most people who returned to the driving range didn't know I was the only one there on September 11. Except Mary - the woman (my friend) who sold me the bucket of balls that morning. From that day on, we shared a story. When she's asked, Where were you? she says she was watching this strange man hit a bucket of golf balls while the world changed. Where were you? Comments are closed.
