Giving or buying as a protest is a popular motivator for politicians and causes and some opportunistic nonprofits smelling fresh blood in the water.
But it’s not sustainable - the protest of the day that is - but giving or consuming or boycotting as an act of protest are sustainable. They are - and they’re tempting... and emotionally persuasive... and attractive to large groups of people (it’s a way of hoping you’re not alone in your anger - you’re justified because so many others are angry like you - this is your community). This is why screaming about what’s wrong and who’s to blame is the most common social messaging - because it works... because it appeals to highly emotional impulses like this - people may see things differently, but they really don’t want to.
