Not all teams are teams... some are just groups and that's fine - great even.
Being a 'team player' is the new black (or just another buzzword to hide the pain of group projects). But some 'teams' aren't teams and never should be. Sales teams aren't teams... they're motivated individuals. Many, many creatives (designers, writers, copywriters) aren't teams... they're talented people with skills few others have and rarely skill-abilities matching each other in any one employer. To ask some to function as a 'team player' may be another way to destroy the creativity and competitive drive required for success in roles many of our organizations depend on to thrive. It's more than forcing your 'team' concept on people and personalities... It's more than not being a jerk... It's much closer to seeing some of your 'teams' as groups of talented people working in parallel lanes - as long as they're all moving in the same direction. That's how success is built...
