Mission euphemism

1/6/2020

It’s what we say when we don’t want to say what we actually try to do... or we don’t know what our end game is. Or what it would look like if we actually succeeded - if that’s even possible!

eu·phe·mism - /ˈyo͞ofəˌmizəm/ - noun - a mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing.

A mild or indirect substitute... so instead of saying what will actually be accomplished we use words like ‘help’ and ‘partner’ or ‘pray’ (instead of just saying the word we really mean - pay).

A mission statement that’s a weak substitute for radical change is not worth funding.

Passion may get the organization's leadership out of bed every day, but it doesn't mean that passion deserves to be funded.

This is so much more than pass-through ratios... this is about trust and transparency and accountability.
So do you want to help the poor - what the heck does ‘help’ mean?

If you’re brave, you’ll spell it out in real words... the kind of words the poor use to talk about their lives.
