Not all creativity is poetry, prose or fiction.
But all marketing - all good... better marketing - demands creativity. Here's the rub... marketing copy, copywriting, grant writing, direct mail appeals, digital marketing - they are all a form of technical writing. And technical writing seems the least creative and most mechanical, formulaic, defaulting to best practices of safety... but creativity is NOT safe. Yes, those of us who provide technical writing like to say we're 'creative' but our creativity is in crafting engaging, emotional stories to give life to soulless numbers and data and organizational metrics - all of which are probably meaningless to most of the target audience. It's just a different kind of creativity. Poets write for templates. They all try sonnets and iambic pentameter. Poets write for audiences as well as themselves (successful poets at least). We write to be read, engaging, provoke, and generate attention - and writing persuasively like that takes creativity... just not the 'Roses are red' kind. Comments are closed.
