The worst kind of automation is the insulting kind of automation.
"Dear donor, thank you for your business..." First, it was a gift to a nonprofit - the cost of which was supposed to be less than the value I derived from giving it. Second, the title "donor" makes me wonder if they took a kidney and not my gift. Third, "my business" isn't a story I thought I was becoming part of when I gave. Fourth, you know - you just know - this wasn't just a Thank You - it was a solicitation for another gift (more business, I guess). And fifth, it was so generic, so automated, I felt alienated. No, I didn't expect a hand written note from the CEO, but I also didn't expect to be called a name and denied any good feelings I thought I had received. This cancelled, un-did, and soured me. Automation for the "L"
